The demise of Lynch was verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety in a communication to NPR.
The artist, who performed on bass and provided vocals for the impactful all-female country music group for four years since its establishment in 1989, was heading east on US 62 when her vehicle, a 2016 Ford F-150, collided frontally with another car. She was declared deceased at the location by a magistrate.
The additional driver was taken to a nearby medical facility with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The Chicks members Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines shared a homage to Lynch on their Instagram channel, conveying surprise and sorrow regarding the news.
“Laura radiated positivity. Her contagious enthusiasm and wit brought vitality to the initial phase of our group. Our condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this sorrowful period.”
The safety department stated that the inquiry is still in progress. NPR’s comment request to The Chicks’ representatives went unanswered.
Lynch initiated the formation of the band in 1989 alongside siblings Maguire and Strayer (formerly Erwin) and departed from the ensemble after completing three albums in 1993. Maines took over her position. Originally the bass player for the group, Lynch commenced singing with the band after the exit of its initial vocalist, Robin Lynn Macy, in 1992.
