Schinasi Studied art at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design. After graduating, she worked as a window dresser for Saks Fifth Avenue.
Early 1930s, Schinasi began designing eyeglass frames. Altina Schinasi was inspired by the art deco style of the time. Her Harlequin frames were a distinctive style with large, angular frames. They quickly became popular, and were worn by celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.
Altina Schinasi also worked as a filmmaker. She directed several short films, including “Altina” (1937) and “George Grosz’ Interregnum” (1938). She also produced the documentary “Operation Bootstrap” (1950), which chronicled the economic development of Puerto Rico.
